BAP

Bruce A. Phillips, CPA

Founder / CEO

Bruce A. Phillips is a seasoned CPA and a passionate advocate for cloud technology. Having not only run his CPA firm for 25 years, but also serving as a CFO and COO of tech start-ups, he was an early adopter of cloud technology for accounting and other businesses. A well-known name in the SaaS industry, Bruce has been a key beta tester for several cloud technologies and was profiled as early as 2010 by several key players in the industry. More recently he has been featured by Xero, Expensify, Gusto, Receipt Bank, and Hubdoc, all of whom he has close relationships with.

Prior to co-founding his accounting firm, HPC (formerly Harshman, Phillips & Company), Bruce spent seven years at E&Y, including two years as an Audit Manager. As he helped clients navigate the challenging tax and compliance environments in each role, he gained invaluable insight into best (and not-so-best) practices for conducting business and the myriad of ways technology can enhance business efficiency.

“I really enjoy learning about the latest technologies and how I can use them to better my clients, as well as my own company,” says Bruce. Not only were his clients and HPC reaping the benefits of his love of cloud technology, but so were his peers. “More and more colleagues were coming to me and asking for advice on how to change over to cloud-based services or help their clients make the switch. Since I always advocate to do what you love, it was a no-brainer to embrace this new endeavor and help others learn to take advantage of the available technology.”

Bruce is a graduate of The College of William and Mary where he earned his degree in Accounting. Originally from Providence, Rhode Island, he now calls Atlanta, Georgia home. When he’s not assisting clients with their cloud technology needs or providing accounting advice, Bruce is a wine enthusiast, an active tennis player and a passionate traveler.

Stacey Carvalho

Stacey Carvalho

Director of Practice Operations

Stacey is an accomplished professional and a jack of all trades. She is involved in a wide variety of projects and knows how to handle it all with a significant amount of composure. She provides support to the entire team and our clients, communicating well with all levels. She works on numerous special projects, ensuring the client’s expectations, deadlines and customer service goals were being met. With her background in sales promotion and graphic design, she can also flex her creative muscles. When she is not following her Boston sports teams or shoveling snow, she is getting back home to her roots in Hawaii.

Ann Dykes

Director of Implementation & Integration

Ann is our implementation superstar and manages client conversions to Xero including onboarding all new clients to the firm. From a thorough assessment of each client’s procedures and requirements, to workflow design, to Xero add-on integrations, to implementation and training. This savvy Xero expert has it covered. Ann ensures that our clients convert to Xero with ease, have a smooth transition, and supports them 100% through the change. Each client ends up with a Xero account tailored and personalized to their needs and a more efficient workflow.

Catherine

Catherine "Cat" Fogarty

Director of Accounting Technology

Catherine got her first taste of small business accounting when she was 11 and started working with QuickBooks for her family’s concrete company. Catherine oversees our bookkeeping team, providing support to both the bookkeepers and the clients they serve. Catherine also works closely with our implementation team by maintaining client accounts as they go through the set up process. She also works with the maintenance team to ensure a seamless transition from onboarding to ongoing. In her free time, Catherine often visits her family and friends, stopping at new frisbee golf courses and waterfalls along the way.

Jennifer Huang

Director of Client VCFO Services

As our clients' businesses grow, eventually they need more than just support or bookkeeping. They need someone to help them understand the numbers and answer critical questions to help them manage and grow their business. Jen is our Virtual CFO extraordinaire and provides a higher level of advice and support to our clients in this phase. With a pedigree background and resume, we were lucky to grab her from her previous CFO position with a Venture Capital firm in Silicon Valley. From cash flow reporting and projections, to quarterly client meetings, budgets and more, Jen is a trusted advisor. Her experience and knowledge is highly valued by our clients.

Ryan went to work in the corporate world at the start of his career, and after learning about all the innovation happening in cloud accounting, decided to get involved with HPC. Ryan’s focus at HPC will be on creating more efficiency across teams. Ryan lives in Atlanta and enjoys the city life with comedy shows, live music, and the theatre. He is also an Atlanta Braves fan and stays active with basketball and hikes in North GA.

Ellie McLaughlin

People Operations Director

Ellie is a seasoned financial services industry professional with a passion for Client Relationship and Employee Development. She began her career with Merrill Lynch Asset Management as Assistant Vice President of Operations for their Institutional money market product, where she developed and cultivated professional relationships with Institutional clients and assisted Treasurers, CFO’s and money managers with their short-term cash needs.  As Vice President at BlackRock, Ellie managed a team of Registered Representatives and continued to service the Merrill Lynch Financial Advisor platform and BlackRock’s institutional clients. In addition to her expertise as a hiring manager, she brings her experience with all facets of operations and organizational processes to HPC. Ellie resides in a seaside town with her husband, two sons and dog. Avid Boston Sports fans, they are always cheering on the Pats, Sox, Celtics and Bruins!

Matt Nyman

Client Success Manager

Matt is an important part of our sales team, with focus on implementation and workflow needs for our clients. He thoroughly enjoys working hands on with prospects and customers to help them evaluate their workflow and navigate what systems and tools will be the most beneficial given their needs and budget. With years of cloud based accounting experience, Matt has worked with various industries and accounting add-on tools. His experience helps to ensure our customers have a smooth onboarding transition. In his spare time Matt enjoys playing soccer with friends, and trying new frisbee golf courses wherever he travels.

As our head of tax, Laura oversees tax planning and compliance for our clients as they start up and grow their businesses. Before focusing her skills on tax, Laura was co-founder of a start-up and worked at an early stage venture firm. Both of these experiences, along with her other roles guiding and supporting emerging companies, allows her to think about tax from a real world perspective for both the companies and their owners. When Laura isn’t sharing her passion for tax with our clients, she loves to travel and spend time with family and friends.

Sam is responsible for driving HPC’s growth to the next level. Over the last 20 years, he has held roles in all levels of sales, marketing, and business development within a wide range of professional service and technology firms around the globe. Sam has also spoken widely on how cloud technology is changing the delivery and capabilities advisory services.  He is passionate about how technology is changing the delivery of accounting services and is excited to bring that knowledge and experience to HPC during an exciting time. Having lived in Japan for nearly 15 years, Sam has a love for Japanese language, martial arts and food.

Emily Cheshire

Implementation Project Manager

Emily decided to pursue a career in accounting as a result of playing Monopoly as a child - all the numbers, money and business fascinated her.  It was this interest that led her to study accounting and finance at the University of Southampton, England and then continue on to gain her Chartered Accountant designation. Working in implementation, Emily’s speciality is working with clients to transform their accounting and business needs into the cloud.  She has a passion for cloud finance technology and enjoys finding new add-ons to help transform and streamline client's businesses. On the weekends Emily can be found hiking with her family in the Rocky Mountains, out for jogs in the park, or exploring the great Canadian outdoors.

TJ Massingill

TJ Massingill

Implementation Project Manager

T.J. comes to us with plenty of experience in accounting and corporate finance, but his real passion is helping small businesses grow. He believes the blending of cloud technology and solid accounting processes gives small business owners and entrepreneurs a competitive advantage in their market. As a tech-savvy accountant and member of our implementation team, T.J. leverages and optimizes Xero to craft custom solutions for our clients. When T.J. is not developing solutions, he loves spending time with his family and enjoys all things outdoors including running, mountain biking and snowboarding.

Head of Client Experience

Krystal has a degree in Accounting and an MBA in Finance from of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She originally started her career in corporate accounting, but switched to public and fell in love. Krystal derives her professional happiness from working with her clients to make sure they have everything they need to succeed. Bit by the travel bug, she recently embraced the digital nomad lifestyle to trek across the globe for a year in order to gain a better understanding of worldwide cultures and see what this great big planet has to offer. While immersing herself in local culture, Krystal can be found sampling local fare, discovering local wines and wandering for hidden gems. She believes you should do anything that scares you, loves to cook for her friends, and de-stresses with Olympic weight lifting.

Rachel started her career as an auditor in public accounting and holds a Certified Public Accounting license. Her experience working with software and technology companies aligns well with the types of clients HPC services. Rachel enjoys working with clients and helping them through challenging accounting issues. She is excited to help start up companies grow their business. During her free time Rachel loves to camp, hike, spend time boating on the river and lakes of the Midwest, and traveling to new places where she can enjoy the outdoors!

Stephanie Boyd

Outsourced Controller

Stephanie brings a wealth of experience and a long history with HPC to the team.  She is our go to person when clients need on-site or more detailed assistance. Her attention to detail and thoroughness is second to none. Stephanie primarily serves several long standing family enterprises and original clients of HPC and takes care of them from soup to nuts. She also manages the majority of the legacy HPC non-Xero clients of the firm.

Payroll/HR Project Advisor

Tina graduated from Indiana University, Kelley School of Business with a Human Resources Degree. She has over 25 years of experience working to find the best HR/Payroll solutions for clients in the manufacturing, healthcare, telecom, financial, CPG and intelligence sectors. She enjoys helping clients with the technical details surrounding the HR and payroll environments. She founded the first gluten-free camp for kids with Celiac in 2011 and continues to build and promote the camp. When she’s not working to find great solutions for her clients, she enjoys spending time with her family and heading to the theater (Broadway/local). A few of her hobbies are photography, animals, and trying out the newest roller coasters and rides at amusement parks with her teenage son.

After a stint in the corporate world, Michelle decided that providing bookkeeping services from a virtual environment was her calling! She enjoys transitioning clients to the cloud with Xero and other add-on technology apps. Michelle loves to help start-up companies grow. She keeps her life in balance practicing hot yoga and walking her two Brittany Spaniel dogs. Her husband is an actuary/analyst, so they enjoy geeking out on numbers together!

All the way from Wanaka New Zealand, Sharon has more Xero experience than most. We were lucky for her to find us when she and her husband moved to the U.S. last year. She was so good, we hired her on the spot during our first Skype call. It was one of the best decisions we ever made! Sharen's organization and communication skills along with her detailed knowledge of how to do everything Xero are invaluable to HPC and our clients.

Sean works with HPC's Client Success team, helping with our marketing efforts and social media. He embraces data, always looking to improve internal processes and find ways to strengthen the relationships with our clients. In his spare time Sean likes to watch baseball, ride his bike and go to the batting cages. He is also an avid Miami Dolphins fan.

Melissa graduated from SUNY Oswego with an MBA concentrating in accounting and is a CPA. She has worked in public accounting for several years with a focus on small business and tax. She has worked in a variety of industries and has a passion for helping entrepreneurs and small businesses grow. When she's not working, she enjoys hiking with her dog, cooking, playing rec league sports, and just about anything that allows her to be outside.

Alex graduated with her Masters in Accounting from Penn State and started off her accounting career as a Big 4 auditor. After receiving her CPA and learning the ins and outs of an audit, Alex traveled to Thailand for a brief stint teaching English and returned to work in Private Equity. It was there she discovered her love of working with small businesses and entrepreneurs. Outside of work, Alex enjoys staying active through group fitness classes, traveling whenever possible, trying to train her puppy that shoes are not chew toys, shopping for home goods and exploring the Philadelphia food scene.

David is a graduate of San Diego State University with a Master’s degree in Accounting and an emphasis in Accounting Information Systems. David was addicted to cloud accounting from day one, as it combines his interest in technology with his daily work. At HPC, David focuses on providing solutions for eCommerce clients and enjoys working with a wide range of companies. In his spare time, he has fun broadcasting live on his internet stream and shares his passion for board games to viewers worldwide.

Aaron is a graduate of Georgia State University with a degree in Finance and Japanese. During his time at university Aaron travelled abroad many times and continued to work as a part-time bookkeeper. After learning HPC was going completely cloud based, he had to jump onboard as it fit with his lifestyle. Flexibility while still getting all one’s work done is a match made in heaven. After working at the last physical location of HPC, Aaron moved to California to continue to assist all team members with various projects and softwares.

Tim is a recent honors graduate from Southern New Hampshire University with a major in accounting concentrated on federal taxation. With a background in leadership, management, and administration, Tim specializes in client organization around tax matters and helps companies gain and maintain government compliance with business registrations, sales taxes, income and other tax returns, and other miscellaneous documents. He is always willing to lend a hand and is eager to create solutions for our client challenges. When not working, Tim enjoys fishing, hunting, and hiking the woods of New England.

Alison works with the tax team on tax projects, tax registrations, company formations, payroll and HR. Alison is a graduate from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. She is an extremely self-motivated individual with years of private accounting experience as well as extensive experience in finance and marketing. When Alison isn't studying for the CPA exam, various professional certifications, or foreign languages, she can be found at the beach, hiking, practicing muay thai and boxing, yoga, or traveling the world with her husband and Corgi.

Mary joins HPC with 2 years of tax experience in public accounting and a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Minnesota, having passed each of the 4 sections of the CPA exam.  Prior to that, Mary obtained a B.A. in Sociology from Indiana University and gained 6 years of experience in sales, customer service, and marketing in the real estate industry.  During this time, Mary learned the importance of treating customers like a person first and a customer second.  She knows that each individual client comes to us with a unique situation, and it requires deep industry knowledge and effective communication to understand the situation so that the best possible outcome is achieved.  With 3 and 5-year old boys and a step-daughter in high school, Mary and her husband have a limited amount of free time.  But when she does, Mary loves boat rides, hot air balloons, dancing, golfing, and coloring with her children.

Sadie began her career with PWC, providing tax compliance and consulting services to private companies, family offices and individuals.  She understands the complexities of the U.S. tax system and analyzes tax implications from business and individual perspectives.  A former scuba instructor and accounting tutor, Sadie has a natural passion for sharing information with others and loves guiding clients through tough tax scenarios. When it’s not tax season, Sadie enjoys traveling, scuba diving, hiking, and training with her Husky mix, Timber.
